Repetitive Motion Injuries and Chronic Back Pain

A very common phrase used in the work place and that is responsible for many work related injuries is called Repetitive Motion Injuries.  This is when the employee during their workday has to make a repetitive movement to complete the tasks necessary for the usual and customary duties of their employment.

repetitive motion injury chronic back painAn example would be a factory worker who has to place cans coming off of the assembly line into boxes to be delivered.  The employee all day lifts the cans with their right hand and bends to the right side placing the cans in the box.  Many times the employee ends up with low back pain from the repetitive bending at the waist towards the right side.

Another example is the Police Officer that gets in and out of his car all day long, and sits in his car writing his reports.  Most time in a police car, there is what is called right car seat break down.  This is when the right side of the driver’s seat breaks down due to the officer entering and exiting the car.  If you put a level across the seat, you would see that it would be uneven, slanting towards the entrance side of the car.  Now you put the office with an extra 23 pounds of equipment sitting in that vehicle for up to 6 hours a day, and there you have it, low back pain caused by repetitive motion syndrome.

So what is the answer?

The answer is to be aware of the causes of these problems and address them to lessen or eliminate the injuries before they occur.  In office settings, the new buzzword is to have an “ergonomically designed work station.”  Different from the police officers day, the work station of a stationary office worker can be designed to make the chair more conducive for sitting for prolonged periods of time, and to make the computer and work area at a better level to keep the employees head even when working and not leaning forward.  Even for the police officer however, light equipment can be worn such as a nylon gun belt as opposed to the leather ones certain departments still use.  The car seat can be check regularly and replace when left car seat break down occurs.  With the factory worker, they can be trained to utilize both sides of their body, changing their position regularly and having the items to place in boxes at a better level to lessen the chance of injury.

Reducing or eliminating these problems are something that companies are very actively looking at today more than ever due to the high cost of workers compensation insurance for their employee.  There are companies designed exclusively for creating more ergonomically work areas in all aspects of the work force.

If you are an employer, or an employee, you need to be aware of this type of injury and work closely with your human resource division to find the best way to get the most productivity out of yourself or your employees with the least amount problems occurring.  This is one aspect of the work force that to be proactive will result in a better working situation for all.

Invention of Vax-D Spinal Decompression

When talking about Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy, we are truly talking about a relatively new type of treatment compared to many of the traditional type of back pain treatments that have been around for years.  The founder of this treatment is a Dr. Allan Dyer M.D. Phd.  His motivation for finding a non-surgical approach was out of his own problems that left him debilitated due to a herniated disc that he suffered from.

vax d spinal decompression tableUtilizing his understanding of the human body and his creativeness, Dr. Dyer invented the VAX-D decompression table.  This table was brought to the forefront and began to provide treatment to patients in 1996.  Dr. Dyer himself was treated on the table and became pain-free.  With seeing the results that he had he knew he had to bring this to the attention of other Doctors so that they could recommend treatment for their patients.

As the VAX-D treatments began to gain momentum, and large numbers of patients procured treatment with successful results, Dr. Dyer made sure to document these results in various studies that still to this day are used to educate patients about the benefits this type of treatment affords the patient without the need for medication, injections, or surgery.

As good as the VAX-D table was, it still had some points that became difficult for certain patients to receive care.  First the table was a fixed table and required that the patient climb onto the table, which became difficult at times due to their inability to ambulate and raise their leg without pain.  Secondly, the patient was required to lay prone or face down which also created problems for patients that may be slightly obese or have large breasts.  Thirdly, the patient had to hold onto handles above their head face down in order to keep from being pulled off of the table by the pulling unit, which was located at the other end of the table.  This became difficult for the senior patients that did not have the strength in their arms to keep from being pulled off of the table.

All in all though the table performed very well and many studies show that this founding table and its technology invented by Dr. Allan Dyer M.D. Phd. to be at the leading edge of giving patients an non-surgical opportunity to relieve their pain and increase their function, once again enjoying the things that they so much want to do.

Today the technology has advanced, with equipment such as the DRX9000 spinal decompression table.  As effective as the equipment is at treating chronic neck and back pain, best results are seen when a comprehensive approach is taken that is personalized to each person.  For more information about this comprehensive, personalized approach, check out our Total Spine Care Solution.

Degenerative Disc Disease and Living Pain-Free

Degenerative Disc Disease occurs in approximately 85% of the population by the age of 55. Therefore, it’s very important to take proactive steps towards giving yourself a better chance of living pain-free. Staying active through diet and exercise are two of the best methods for doing this.

Diet is the most obvious method. Maintaining a good height to weight relationship is very important. When weight gain occurs it puts greater pressure on an already degenerative disc disease condition and increases the normal curvature of the low back.

This is referred to as sway back, which increasing the chances for pain. A nutrition expert is someone you should seek help from if having trouble with controlling your weight or if you are in need of weight loss to help combat the pain of living with degenerative disc disease.

Exercise, especially when done correctly, is equally as important for increasing your chances of living pain free from degenerative disc disease. The primary reason is because exercise helps to stabilize the spine and establish a good core.

The abdominal muscles and the back muscles play a huge part in this stabilizing process. Many patients were able to assist their Doctors in lowering or eliminating their pain from degenerative disc disease all together by establish a good core. Exercises to strengthen the body are simple to perform and very important for keeping a strong abdomen and spine.

Here are three exercises that will assist you in decreasing pain from degenerative disc disease.

The first exercise is called a curl up exercise. In this exercise, you lie flat on your back and bend your knees. You then slightly lift your head and shoulders off of the ground. Lift them just enough to get your shoulder blades off the floor. Next, hold this position for approximately 5 to 10 seconds, then rest and return to your starting position. You should repeat this process 10 to 15 times. This exercise is excellent at strengthening the abdominal muscles.

Degenerative disc disease exerciseThe second exercise is good for strengthening the back muscles. Begin by laying face down on the floor and arch backwards lifting your head and shoulders upward. While doing this, tighten the muscles of your buttocks and hold this position for approximately 10 seconds.

The third exercise is also effective for strengthening your back. Begin by laying down onto an exercise mat. Lift your shoulders and head off the floor as far as you can while tightening the muscles of your buttocks. Hold the position for 5 to 10 seconds. You should repeat this process 10 to 15 times just as you did for the abdominal muscle exercise.

By incorporating these three simple exercises into your daily workout plan you greatly increase your chances of living pain-free from degenerative disc disease.

Next, I’d like to discuss flexibility. Working on increasing flexibility is another area that is very important to prevent or relieve lower back pain and combat the side effects of degenerative disc disease.

One of the flexibility exercises that you can do is to stand upright on the floor. With your hands at your side, lean back as far as you can. You should try to hold this position for approximately 5 seconds and repeat this process 5 to 10 times.

Your ham strings also play an important part in keeping the spine strong yet flexible, which is a great way to prevent the pain that degenerative disc disease can bring. To work on the flexibility of the ham strings, lie on your back and bend your knees. While lying in this position, bend one knee and grasp the back of your thigh with both of your hands. Next, while pushing against your hands, try to straighten your knee until you feel as if you are stretching the muscles of your low back.

Do not do this exercise too strenuously and only push until you feel the stretch not pain in the low back. Try to hold this position for approximately 30 seconds and repeat the exercise 2 to 3 times.

Degenerative disc disease doesn’t have to be painful if you can maintain a good height to weight ratio as well as good exercise and stretching routines. Don’t let degenerative disc disease rob you of fun in your golden years. Fight back with the Total Spine Care Solution and the information I’ve just shared with you. This gives you the best possible chance to live a life free of low back pain.
